The closure of Tegel airport marks an important change in the way air travel is organised and experienced. The design of this airport is of a time when flight was associated with glamour, fantasy, technological progress, romantic chance encounters and fictional disasters. The building consists of a large concrete hexagonal structure circumnavigated by a corridor, punctuated with brightly coloured check-in desks. Viewing platforms and executive lounges populate the circumference of the building, inviting the traveller to enjoy a navigable thoroughfare instead of the shed-like enclosure with limited seating. There are commissioned art works, restaurants and bars, cafés and shops. The décor follows the distinctive bright colour schemes of its age all the way through to the plastic sinks and hand dryer in the restrooms. Tegel Airport is closing and while there are rumours about the next incarnation of this elegant building, what it might become in the future remains uncertain. The 36 films selected for TEGEL: FLIGHTS OF FANCY speculate on both how the airport might be occupied in the future and what it symbolized in the past, they explore how air travel is hard wired into the imagination: the cinematic (disaster, romance and action movie all in one), and consider concepts of cultural mobility, exchange and internationalism. Split Animal Sculpture is a 10′ coloured vinyl with handmade artwork, produced in a limited edition of 300 numbered copies. Jan St. Werner has created an individual way to listen to the record with headphones AND speakers that will first be introduced to the audience on the very evening. This is the third record published by Infinite Greyscale Records, the first two are by celebrated musicians Gabriel Saloman and Jefre Cantu-Ledesma.

Der Flughafen Berlin Tegel verkörpert in besonderer Weise die Urform des Un-Ortes Flughafen; eine Zone, durchdrungen von Konsum, gleichzeitig aber besetzt von den mythischen Versprechen vergangener Tage: Exklusivität, Glamour, romantische Zufallsbekanntschaften und dramatische Abschiedsszenen, unmittelbar erlebter, technischer Fortschritt und die Potenzialität der Katastrophe. Die bevorstehende Schließung des Flughafens Berlin Tegel jedoch markiert eine Wende in der Art, wie wir Flugreisen wahrnehmen. Vor dem Hintergrund einer globalisierten Welt erscheint die Stilisierung des Fliegens zum Abenteuer nicht nur unzeitgemäß, sondern hochgradig lächerlich. Anders als die modernistische Architektur des Flughafens Berlin Tegel befördert das funktionale Design zeitgenössischer Flughäfen denn auch nicht mehr die Illusion eines exklusiven Erlebnisses.

Tegel ist nun Geschichte, im buchstäblichen wie auch im übertragenen Sinne. Wie aber mit einem solchen „Relikt“ umgehen? Über einen Zeitraum von 18 Monaten hat eine ausgewählte Gruppe von internationalen Künstler_innen und Autor_innen sich dieser Fragestellung in spekulativ-künstlerischer Weise gewidmet und dabei die Situation des Flughafens, seine Geschichte ebenso wie Möglichkeiten der zukünftigen Nutzung reflektiert.

Book launch and film screening:
Tegel: Speculations and Propositions

What started out as a program of short artists’ videos screened at Babylon cinema on June 2nd 2012 (when Tegel originally was supposed to close) turned into a stimulating publication as well as a DVD both edited and curated by Jaspar Joseph-Lester, Susanne Prinz and Julie Westerman, examining new perspectives and approaches to urban renewal, regeneration, social organisation and the question of how art can take a part in it.
 
Tegel airport is the very embodiment of exchange, a curious place of transition and in being so, a non-place in which one might feel trapped as one can do nothing except wait, shop and eat – and at the same time get a glimpse of the great romantic myths air travelling once was related with: glamour, romantic encounters as well as dramatic farewells, technological progress as well as fictional disasters etc. The imminent closure of Tegel airport, however, marks a change in the way air travel is experienced. Flight in a globalized world as it seems is no longer an exclusive adventure and quite contrary to Tegel’s modernist design today’s airports no longer encourage an illusion of that kind. So Tegel’s time is over, literally as much as figuratively. So what to do about it? Over a period of eighteen months a selected group of international artists and writers focused their attention on Tegel airport, observing its current use, reflecting on its history and speculating on how the building could be used in future.
