Rahel Sorg – Hyänen weinen nicht

Ausstellungsdauer / Exhibition dates:
17. 10 – 22.11.2025

[ENG] The paintings move on the border between figuration and abstraction; they are characterized by intense color, which result from the use of a wide variety of painting media and the manner in which they are applied and integrated into the image. By playing with familiar ways of looking at art and evoking memories of familiar forms, the works trigger associations that are then undermined by their incompleteness. Questions arise about whether there is too much or too little. Similarly, numbers and letters can be interpreted—sometimes forming words, sometimes sentences, but at other times remaining illegible. The artist describes her work as an attempt to stimulate thought—to set the mind in motion without dictating where it should go.

Consequently, the realization remains that Rahel Sorg’s paintings cannot truly be put into words, precisely because they deliberately elude unambiguous interpretation. This is precisely where the intended effect lies: to provide food for thought, to point in various directions, and to focus the use of painting and language on being simple within complexity, without imposing guidelines or restrictions.

Pause, persevere, continue, done.

We would like to thank Lina Louisa Krämer, Deborah Sorg, Anna Virnich, and Winfried Virnich, without whom this exhibition would not have been possible, as well as the Mainz Academy of Fine Arts for its support of the catalog.
