In ihrer eigens für die Fensterfront des Kunstvereins konzipierten Videoinstallation ‘Restraining Motion’ thematisiert die in Berlin lebende israelische Künstlerin Sharon Paz die Rolle des Individuums in der Gesellschaft. Ihr künstlerisches Mittel dabei ist eine von ihr entwickelte Form des Schattentheaters, das sie in wechselnden realistischen Räumen situiert. Die Darstellung von Zwang und Auflehnung des Einzelnen gegen Umstände und äußere Zwänge unterliegt dabei einer hoch stilisierten Choreographie mit Hang zum Absurden. Schon seit einigen Jahren gelingen Paz gleichsam auf den Ruinen dieser historischen Theaterform Inszenierungen, die egal ob als Film oder Performance der Anschauung im gleichen Maße dienen wie der Zurschaustellung. Im L40 können diese vom Betrachter von der Strasse genau wie vom Besucher der Ausstellung besichtigt werden. Ergänzend wird erstmals der Film ‘The Right to Leave’ gezeigt.
‘Restraining Motion’ läuft täglich von 17—24 Uhr. Die Ausstellung ist Do—Sa von 17—20 Uhr geöffnet.

At the center of the show is the artist’s new multi-channel video installation ‚ Restraining Motion‘ which she developed for the windows of the Kunstverein L40. In it Berlin-based Israeli artist Sharon Paz explores the role of the individual within society. Albeit her representation of coercion and rebellion of the individual against circumstances and external constraints is subjected to a highly stylized choreography with a penchant for the absurd. While ‘Retsrained Motion’ cannot be placed in a particular time or place her second film ‘The Right to Leave‘ seems to point back into history although probs and scenery can clearly be identified as quite recent and in parts not located in Germany at all. On closer inspection one discovers that time is suspended once more as all human movement is looped and always returns to the same point. A situation echoed by the architecture of the prominently featured REH house – a unique folding structure invented in the GDR – and by the motion of the train – itself caught on the tracks while trapping people inside the wagons having to play musical chairs over and over again.
‘Restraining Motion’ can been viewed daily 5—12 pm. The exhibition is open Thur—Sat 5—8 pm.
