Wir freuen uns, die neue Arbeit von Paula Döpfner, die Teil der Ausstellung DAS BLATT von Curated Affairs ist, auf dem öffentlichen Grün zwischen Almstadt- und Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße als Gastveranstalter zu zeigen. Aufgrund der aktuellen Situation findet diese Ausstellung nicht im Realraum in Düsseldorf statt sondern dezentral bei den Künstler*innen und kann unter www.curated-affairs.de verfolgt werden.

Alone…

Diese drei Zeilen finden sich, von Hand geschrieben, auf einem Blatt Papier, in einen langsam schmelzenden Eisblock eingefasst. Es ist die künstlerische Arbeit „Death Letter Blues“, 2020, der Künstlerin Paula Doepfner, die nun am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz im Freien aufgestellt ist. Das Zitat stammt aus dem Gedichtband „Déchirures“, 1955, der Dichterin Joyce Mansour (1928-1986), das Paula Doepfner in ihrer künstlerischen Installation bildhauerisch verarbeitet. Mansour wird gewöhnlich der Gruppe der französischen Surrealisten zugeschrieben. Die Dichterin, in England geboren, aus einer jüdisch-ägyptischen Familie stammend und später von Kairo nach Paris gegangen, steht aber für eine ganz eigene Sprachkunst. Sie schreibt aus einer weiblich-selbstbestimmten Perspektive, die Liebe, Gewalt, Tod und Lust vereint. Die drei Zeilen, die Paula Doepfner für ihre Arbeit ausgewählt hat, handeln vom Ich und vom Alleinsein.

Poesie und die künstlerischen Arbeiten von Paula Doepfner haben Vieles gemeinsam. Sie scheinen eine gemeinsame Sprache zu sprechen, die etwas Erzählerisch-Nahbares in sich trägt, aber nie einfach oder eindeutig zu verstehen ist. Dafür ist ihre Sprache zu mannigfaltig und im ständigen Fluss der Veränderung.

It is part of the exhibition DAS BLATT by Curated Affairs which due to the current situation does not take place in the original space in Düsseldorf but was moved to the artist’s home base and can be followed at http://curated-affairs.de/das-blatt

Alone…

These three lines, written by hand, stand on a piece of paper encased in a slowly melting block of ice. This is a work of art by Paula Doepfner, Death Letter Blues, from 2020; it has just been installed in the open air on Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz. The quotation is from a collection of poems by the female poet Joyce Mansour (1928–1986), Déchirures, from 1955. Doepfner’s art installation is a sculptural response to that collection of poems. Mansour is generally associated with the French Surrealists. Yet this poet, who was born in England to Jewish-Egyptian parents and later moved from Cairo to Paris, has a very particular and personal style of writing. She writes from the perspective of an emancipated woman, a perspective that combines love, violence, death and pleasure. The three lines that Doepfner has chosen for this work deal with the self and with solitude.

Poetry and works by Paula Doepfner have much in common. They seem to speak the same language. It’s an approachable, narrative language, though its meaning is never straightforward or obvious. It has too many layers for that, and it’s always subject to change.
